For our founder, Leslie Moran, healing always came naturally to her. She noticed that sometimes when she simply laid her hand on a person’s shoulder their pain, emotional or physical, became a lighter load for them. Then she discovered that this gift would sometimes help heal the animals she loved. These experiences helped Leslie recognize that sometimes she could be a conduit for healing.
One of her most amazing ‘miracle’ healing experiences took place several years ago while visiting a friend in the hospital. Her friend had been in a serious car accident and had been put into an induced coma to save her life. Fortunately, this friend’s sister came to town and took over her health care as her ‘power of attorney’. The sister insisted that the doctors bring Leslie’s friend out of the coma. So they did.
Once awake and lucid, the friend’s sister called Leslie, explained what had happened and asked her to come and help. Leslie appeared at the hospital that same day. The treating physicians had given Leslie’s friend a bleak prognosis. Telling her that she would never walk again and would need to be in a ‘care facility’ for the rest of her life.
This friend had been deeply involved in animal rescue work her entire life. And the thought of giving up her passion, and her animals, was something she could not, would not accept.
During the first visit Leslie asked her friend what she wanted for herself. Her friend gave her the details of the type of life she wanted for herself. First she wanted to walk again, and second she wanted to go home. Not be shuffled into some alien and detached ‘care facility’.
Being that they were both in a hospital doing any type of ‘traditional’ healing treatment was entirely out of the question. This would attract way too much attention. So, instead, Leslie explained that she would sit in a chair at the foot of the bed and place one of her hands on her friend’s ankle. She would close her eyes, set a prayerful intention, and then they would have a normal conversation about whatever topics came up.
To anyone walking by, or even when a nurse came into the room, everything appeared quite normal.
One friend visiting another in the hospital and having a pleasant visit. For three days in a row Leslie came back and visited her friend in the hospital. Then, Leslie skipped a day. When she returned to visit her friend in the hospital the next day she was not in the bed in her room. When Leslie asked where her friend was a nurse pointed down the hall. Leslie turned and saw her friend walking, with the aid of a walker. But, walking. Doing something the friend’s doctors had told her she would never do again. Her friend continued improving and four or five days later she was released from the hospital and went home. Home. Home to all her beloved animals. Leslie’s friend demonstrated that she was open, willing and ready to receive all that she desired. So it came to pass. We all play a role in our own healing, and the healing processes taking place in the animals we all love. John Muir, founder of the Sierra Club, explained, that “When we try to pick out anything by itself, we find it hitched to everything else in the Universe.” And Chief Seattle tells us that, “We are all connected in the web of life.” When our actions respect these connections we all benefit.
